The launch of a new iPhone in the market has always been a much-awaited event but the anticipation before the release of iPhone 5s was unmatched. The wait was finally over on the 10th of September when Tim Cook, Apple’s new CEO unveiled it at the Apple headquarters in Cupertino. Phil Schiller, one of the creators, has been calling it “the most forward thinking phone we’ve ever created”.
Sales for iPhone 5S go public from the 20th of September, with the hardware being available in Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, Singapore, China, US and the UK. It is also estimated to expand this list to about 100 countries by the end of the year.
iPhone 5s is currently priced at 200$, 300$ and 400$ for 16GB, 32GB and 64GB respectively. Rumour has it that even though iPhone 4S shall remain available in the market, these new models will end up wiping out iPhone 5 completely.
The main features of the model are given below.
Display
iPhone 5s boasts of a body having dimensions 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm and weighing about 112 g, which is similar to the iPhone 5, its predecessor. The display type is an LED-backlit IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen complete with multitouch. The screen size is 640 x 1136 pixels in about 4 inches, which amounts to a pixel density of 326ppi. It is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass and has an oleophobic coating. The phone is available in three colour options gold, silver and “space grey”.
Hardware
Inside the iPhone 5s one finds a 64-bit A7 processor, which contains twice the number of transistors as the iPhone 5. Meanwhile, the CPU and GPU promise a speed twice as fast as the predecessor (which clocks to about 40 times faster than the first iPhone). The memory card slot is absent; however it comes with an internal memory of 16/32/64GB. The model is accompanied with the new M7, which monitors all data in real-time with the aid of the compass, accelerometer and gyroscope.
In terms of battery life, iPhone 5s promises a full 10 hours of 3G talk time and LTE browsing. Apart from this, the phone stays alive for 40 hours of music playback and up to 250 hours on standby. It comes with a 3.5mm audio jack and a 2.0 version USB. The 4.0 version of Bluetooth with A2DP is also installed in it.
A new feature present in this model is the Touch ID, the official name given to the fingerprint scanner. It has a pixel density of 500ppi and can scan at a sub-epidermal level for most accurate results. This feature will biometrically let you unlock your phone. It can also be used for purchase from iTunes.
Software
Good news for all the iPhone lovers! The new iPhone 5s comes with the much-awaited iOS 7 already installed into it, with the Apple A7 chipset and an internal antenna. Default apps such as alarm, calculator, calendar, notes, voice recorder, weather, stocks amongst others are present.
Camera
iPhone 5s is equipped with an 8 MP primary camera, with 32464 x 2448 pixels, dual-LED flash and autofocus. With a pixel size of 1.5 µm it can simultaneously record HD videos and images. Other features present are the touch focus, geo tagging, panorama and face detection. Other than these, it is also offering True Tone flash which can feature 1000 variations of colour temperature to get the right flesh tone. One can also snap up to 10 frames a second just by clicking the shutter button and obtain a perfect picture. The panoramic shot clocks in at a whopping 28 MP and also lets you adjust the exposure of the picture while you’re taking it.
It also has a secondary camera of 1.2 MP with face detection. FaceTime is convenient to use over Wi-Fi or cellular data.
Keeping in with its trend of refreshing design and hardware of iPhone alternately, Apple has upped the ante of mobile phone hardware with the iPhone 5S. The 5S is the first smartphone powered by a 64 bit processor, making it future-proof and giving it an edge over competitors, and Touch ID Fingerprint Sensor adds a new meaning to security. So, for many the device might not have revolutionary changes, it does have some unique aspects making it a must buy for Apple fans.
