The Syrian government has blocked the popular messaging service WhatsApp. This news was tweeted today via the official Twitter handle of the company. WhatsApp itself has nothing to do with the blockade and was not informed either. Exact reason for the blockade has not been updated by Whatsapp, although it is likely that it will have something to do with the battle in the province Homs. However, WhatsApp tweets that this blockade is a major blow to free speech.
For now there is are growing unrest in Syria, the tension between the army of president Assad and the population of the province Homs have already cost the lives of many Syrians. Many Syrians flee Homs for Lebanon.
We are told that WhatsApp is now being blocked in Syria. A blow to free speech and open communications everywhere. Sad day for freedom.
