Android Ad-hoc Wi-Fi Mesh network to prepare for the End of the World

Androiders of the World have woken up to sustain a communication channel incase of a catastrophe of the volumes where the wireless communication network goes down forever.

The Serval Mesh Project aims to maintain a communication channel of the highest availability, even when the wireless infrastructure network goes down.

Still wondering what the F is happening?

Let’s take an example and explain this, Imagine a war zone or even worse, imagine it’s the 21th December 2012 and the world is ending (I really don’t think there will be anything special happening on that day, but just imagine ;)), say, an astroid has hit our planet or something really serious has happened, chances are that wireless telecommunication networks around the world will stop working. What do you do then? How do you get across to speak to your loved ones? to know where they are, how they are?

Folks over at The Serval Mesh Project say, “Nothing should prevent you from communicating with those near and dear to you.
We also believe that people should be able to continue to communicate when they need it most.
In the face of earthquake, wild fire or cyclone, communications systems should keep working as well as they can, with whatever infrastructure remains available.”

Indeed an awesome and interesting idea, but how does it work?

Well, here is how the Serval for Android Work

Serval uses an ad-hoc WiFi to connect Android phones directly to other Android smart phones which have the Serval Project app installed. If this happens it makes a strong mesh network and suddenly each smart phone on the Ad-hoc network can now talk to each other without the use of any Network Tower or other infrastructure at all! Serval allows users hop onto the mesh network using their existing phone numbers, so there won’t be any need to create special IDs.

Serval is a carrier-independent, tower-less wireless telecommunications network that is run by people, for now only Android App is out. It is completely free and open-source, can be activated within seconds of a disaster because of its distributed nature with almost Zero downtime!

For now, it doesn’t have any practical use, but we recommend you to download and install it if you have an Android phone, in case, a Zombie Apocalypse happens tomorrow.

Download Serval for Android App from the Android Market or fire up your bar-code scanner and point it on the QR Code to directly get a link to the app.

P.S.: It required a Root Android phone to work!

Lastly, We would give this Technology and HUGE HUGE thumbs up, because of it’s sole purpose of helping people out in dire situations.

There are people who make an App to earn money and there are people who make an App to change the world.
