Android is a Â mobile operating system initially developed by Android Inc. Android was bought by Â Google in Â 2005. Â Android is based upon a modified version of the Â Linux kernel. Google and other members of the Â Open Handset Alliance collaborated on Android’s development and release. Â The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is tasked with the maintenance and further development of Android.
In Q4 2010 the Android O.S. was the world’s best-selling smartphone platform, dethroning Â Nokia’s Â Symbian from the 10 year top position, according to Canalys.
Acquisition by Google
In July 2005, Â Google acquired Android Inc., a small Â startup company based in Â Palo Alto, California, USA. Â Android’s co-founders who went to work at Google included Â Andy Rubin (co-founder of Â Danger), Â Â Rich Miner (co-founder of Wildfire Communications, Inc.),Nick Sears (once VP at Â T-Mobile), Â and Chris White (headed design and interface development at Â WebTV). Â At the time, little was known about the functions of Android, Inc. other than that they made software for mobile phones.This began rumors that Google was planning to enter the Â mobile phone market.
