The obsession with Porn; 1/3 of the world wide web traffic is porn

Recent studies conducted reveal that around 30 per cent of all internet traffic is pornography. Xvideos supposedly the largest porn site on the web – receives 4.4billion page views and 350 million unique visits per month, if reports on the ExtremeTech website are to be believed. Google Plus still has just a 100 million active users per month.

It is the only sites more popular are Google and Facebook.

The stats were obtained from the viewing figures for Xvideos from Google’s DoubleClick Ad Planner, which uses cookies to gather information about users.

A major difference between porn and non-porn sites is the amount of time spent on the sites. For a news site like Engadget or ExtremeTech, a visitor usually spends between three and six minutes; reading one or two articles. The average time spent on a porn site, however, is between 15 and 20 minutes,” explains Extreme Tech.

This is an expected behavior considering the fact that these sites are visited for video content; it takes time for the buffering. Even in case the video is a low resolution one, we are still talking about huge volume of data – significantly higher than the amount of information in a non-porn site.

Consider the The DNetWorks home page; it is a couple of megabytes when it loads, and then around 500 Kb for each subsequent article loaded.

Now consider a porn site. When you try to stream porn, even if it is a resolution as low as 480×200, on an internet connection where the speed is 100 kilobytes per second takes over 15 minutes, the amount of  data is streaming that takes place is 90 megabytes.

Some interesting stats:

YouPorn, supposedly the second biggest sex site, has about 100 million page views a day and transfers 950 terabytes daily. That’s the equivalent of 10 dual-layer DVDs per second. YouPorn accounts for two per cent of total internet traffic.

Based on this, it is estimated that around 29 petabytes of pornography is being transferred a month, or 50 gigabytes per second.

It has been estimated that at peak times, Xvideos streams one terabyte per second, which is one fifteenth of the total amount of bandwidth between London and New York.
