At about 5:30 PM IST, commuters were moving towards their train at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) formerly know as Victoria Terminus (VT), in Mumbai and all of a sudden the boring intercoms which generally announce the Train updates started to play Rang de Basanti, the title track of the Hit Bollywood movie, Rang de Basanti. As the sound filled the terminus, a young girl walked into a clearing and broke into a dance.
The crowd were confused as to what was going on, some very eager to see, while some wanted to know what exactly was happening, but little did the know it was a beginning of the first Flash Mob to hit a Mumbai railway station, People started to join in and by the end of three minutes, there were 200 people dancing at CST Station. The performance ended forty-five seconds later.
“We wanted to attract people from all walks of life and not just from a particular strata of society. CST, being one of the busiest stations in the city, witnesses a variety of people and seemed like the perfect stage,” says Shonan.
Organiser Shonan Kothari, 23, who works for a CSR consultancy, said she did it on “a whim” and managed to mobilise enough people to practice for a couple of weeks before executing the dance at the station, which shut down train activity for four minutes during both performances. Kothari says railway authorities, which are usually loath to give permission for commercial purposes like film shoots, embraced the idea.
