Windows  offers the facility to hide all the icons on your desktop. To change this setting simply right-click on the desktop and a menu will appear.
On a Windows XP machine, Right Click on the desktop and Click on Arrange icons by from the Pop-up Menu, make sure that Show Desktop Icons have a Tick and you are done!
On the Windows Vista or Windows 7 Machine, however, the trick is slightly different, you right click on the desktop to get the Pop-up menu, Click View, then click on Show Desktop Icons and Voila!
