Is is rightly said about Apple, “They take a technology that already exists, improve it a bit and sell it as the second coming.” That was one of the Android staffer’s analysis of the iPhone 4S launch and we struggle to find a more succinct interpretation of what was unveiled in Cupertino, California a few days back by Tim Cook.
Here are some of the Features where Android beats iOS hands down
Ice-Cream Sandwich vs iOS 5
The launch of iOS 5 is a key selling point for the iPhone 4S, yet it’s by no means exclusive to that handset. As you should all know by now, Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich update is due next week on 11 October, launched has been delayed, however we’ll be able to give a clearer head-to-head then but we’re pretty confident it will withstand the challenge.
This may sound funny but, key iOS 5 features include improved Twitter connectivity, iMessage, which will face stiff competition from BBM for Android and WhatsApp, and location-based reminders. These all features are already done a year back or is in the works for Android and hardly the smartphone war’s ‘Golden horse’.
Siri vs Voice Action for Android
Let’s not be unfair, Siri does look a fairly impressive piece of tech if it works to its full potential as they’ve presented it to be.
Is it a brand new invention though? BIG NO.
Is it going to be available to all iOS users? Nope, only those who shell out for an iPhone 4S, well, few jailbroken dudes might have it on their phone, but don’t know when.
Does it have the edge over Google Voice? Good question 😉
Siri’s capabilities are impressive, imagine telling your phone to remind you to get some milk and then getting a push notification as soon as you’re in the vicinity of the supermarket. That’s phenomenal stuff but it belongs to a road which Voice Action for Android is already travelling down in a free, since more than a year now, open source and constantly evolving. Plus, Voice’s translation function remains the best available.
The Sherlock (Mr. Obvious): More Devices
The biggest contributing factor to Android’s dominance is the sheer number of products running the operating systems. From smartphones to tablets, a large number of products are running Google’s mobile operating system. So when customers head to the store and look for a device not running iOS, they’re most likely to find an Android-based device. That alone gives Google’s OS an advantage against iOS, which is only running on the iPhone and iPad. Android tablet may be available as low as $35 in the near future
Attractive pricing
One of the central reasons for Android’s success has been the pricing of devices running the OS. Aside from expensive products, like the Droid Bionic, there are several cheaper Android-based devices that allow those on a budget to get into the smartphone game. Sure, the iPhone is attractive, but its starts at $199. And for some folks, that’s simply too expensive. But if they can get their hands on a cheaper, albeit less capable, Android device, they’ll jump at that chance. Simply put, Android vendors have brought many more consumers into the smartphone market.
No Carrier Dependency
Over the last few years, carrier marketing of Android-based devices has been outstanding. The key reason for that has been the relative lack of availability of Apple’s iPhone.
For years, Apple’s device was only on AT&T’s network, which meant companies like Verizon and Sprint were forced to promote their best alternatives and those alternatives happened to be Android-based smartphones. Now, T-Mobile and Sprint are promoting Android heavily.
Furthermore, there is no carrier restriction for most of the Android phone, you can buy them, use them on any carrier you wish, take to any country, use that countries SIM and it JUST WORKS!
While the iPhone 4S is undoubtedly a very good handset, well, yeah 😐 the question that Apple will find hard to shake is whether it’s worth the massive price tag that it carries. We don’t think so, what else do I say? , I may not be an iPhone fanboy but I respect it as a product that simultaneously changed the telecommunications and mobile computing industries. The fact of the matter, though, is that Android and its manufacturers have well and truly caught up with Apple to the point where new product announcements from the consumer electronics titan have lost their ‘wow factor’.
Bottomline is, Apple should stick to what they do the BEST, Make computer 🙂
