4 Things to Do After Setting Up a Swiss VPN to Enhance Security

Over the past several years, many users are turning to a VPN to provide enhanced Internet security.  Swiss VPN services have become particularly popular.  Signing up for a quality Swiss VPN service has never been easier.

In order to gain maximum protection, there are four steps which should be taken after the Swiss VPN has been set up.

1.  Set Up Different Passwords for Every Online Profile

A Swiss VPN will encrypt the data stream to ensure third parties cannot steal passwords as they are passed between the VPN server and the user’s device.

Unfortunately, it will do nothing to protect passwords stolen directly from websites.  To gain maximum protection, it is important to use a different password for every online profile.  This is the only way to ensure that if one account becomes compromised the other online accounts will still be safe.

Nothing is worse than discovering your e-mail account or social networking account has been hacked only to discover the hacker’s real purpose was to gain the password to access online banking accounts.

2.  Always Use Automatic Updates

Nearly every piece of software needs to be updated once in a while.  A majority of programs allow users to apply updates automatically.  Once a Swiss VPN has been set up, double check to make sure every program installs updates automatically.

This eliminates the risk of exploit kits and drive-by-downloads from taking advantage of known vulnerabilities.

3.  Install Quality Internet Security Software

While a Swiss VPN acts as a proactive way to protect devices and data, it is powerless once malware or a virus reaches the device.  To create a strong last line of defense installing quality Internet security software is essential.

Some people prefer to only use antivirus software, but a full Internet security suite will include a greater range of protection.  Most importantly, it will include a program designed to detect all types of malware rather than focusing solely on viruses.

4.  Setup a NAT Firewall

The final thing to do once a Swiss VPN connection is established is setting up a NAT firewall.  A traditional firewall is used to determine where inbound and outbound data is meant to go.  It is particularly important when connecting to a wireless network because it determines which device receives which data.

From a security perspective, a firewall eliminates the threat of open ports.  Since a Swiss VPN establishes a private encrypted tunnel, a traditional firewall will not monitor for open ports from the device.  Setting up a NAT firewall overcomes this issue.

The number of Internet security threats continues to grow on a daily basis.  Internet security experts agree that new threats are discovered on a regular basis.  The only way to protect devices from new threats is by creating a comprehensive, layered defense.

While a Swiss VPN will protect data integrity and privacy it will not proactively prevent malware and viruses from being downloaded or reaching the device.  It also will not protect any data stored online.

By setting up different passwords for each online account, taking advantage of automatic software updates, installing quality Internet security software, and setting up a NAT firewall any internet security threat will have to get by multiple layers of defense to cause harm.
